Petzl: 50 Years of Mountains and Verticality
Founded in 1975 in Crolles, near Grenoble and at the heart of the Chartreuse massif, the brand Petzl specialises in products designed for verticality. Its founder, Fernand Petzl, was passionate about caving and constantly sought to improve the equipment he used. He invented the first ascenders, descenders, and pulleys as early as 1967, allowing him to abandon ladders during underground sessions. In 1972, with the help of his sons Pierre and Paul, the first Petzl headlamp was created. Quickly, the family business ventured into harnesses for climbing and caving. The brand became known for the manuals and user guides it provided with each product, in the form of diagrams and drawings. After expanding internationally in the 1980s, Petzl equipped some of the best climbers in the world. Through research, inventiveness, testing, and innovation, the brand Petzl now offers a comprehensive range dedicated to safety and outdoor sports, with a specialty in climbing and alpinism. From headlamps, harnesses, ropes, carabiners, helmets, gri-gri, belayers, descenders, ice axes, and crampons, the brand is capable of equipping most adventurers in search of altitude and stability.
Petzl: Designing Safety, Climbing, and Outdoor Equipment
Present in the professional sector, the Petzl brand also stands out for its sports equipment dedicated to verticality and lighting.
Petzl Headlamps: Condensed Technologies
Since its first headlamp launched in 1972, “everything on the head,” the brand has come a long way, with constant evolution. New technologies have allowed the family business to imagine and design Petzl headlamps that are increasingly powerful, lightweight, and better suited to the needs of outdoor practitioners. The Grenoble-based brand offers 4 product ranges dedicated to lighting. Among them are the Classic headlamps, which are lightweight, compact, and easy to use. The Tikka headlamp provides close-range lighting for everyday activities. Another range, the Active headlamps, prioritises power with their multi-beam features. The Actik Core headlamp is one of those. With 450 lumens, it meets the versatile needs of outdoor activities such as running, trail running, hiking, or alpinism. The Performance range brings intelligence. Thus, the Iko Core headlamp automatically and instantly adjusts its lighting level to the ambient brightness. Finally, there is a last range of headlamps specialised for activities where lighting needs are very specific. This is the Specialized range.
Petzl Climbing and Alpinism Equipment: Quality at the Service of Verticality
Petzl Harnesses, Carabiners, and Quickdraws: Tested and Approved Climbing Equipment
Very quickly, the French brand Petzl developed products aimed at improving the mobility and safety of those who are suspended. Thus, a complete range of Petzl harnesses for climbing, alpinism, canyoning, caving, and children exists. They have always met three main criteria: the safety of the climber, comfort, and ergonomics. The Adjama harness, for example, is ideal for alpinism or climbing on cliffs and long routes. Other harnesses and belts, more technical, are intended for other practices. The Altitude 2020 harness, for instance, is designed for alpinism and ski touring as it can be put on while standing and has gear loops.
To accompany all vertical adventures, Petzl has created and developed the necessary climbing equipment. Thus, the Petzl carabiners, including the Attache locking carabiner or the Spirit Screw Lock carabiner, are among the best on the market. All equipped with the Keylock system, Petzl carabiners vary in shapes, sizes, and locking systems to meet all uses. Similarly, the famous Grigri belayer from Petzl is known and recognised by all climbers. In its climbing range, the brand also offers quickdraws, ascenders, and pulleys to complete your climbing gear.
Petzl Ice Axes and Crampons: Exploring the Ice Worlds
In its constant quest to equip all outdoor practitioners looking to climb and explore new summits, the Grenoble-based company naturally offers a range of Petzl ice axes. Thanks to numerous advancements in both technology and design, the brand offers ice axes for all practices, from glacier hiking to the limits of ice and modern mixed climbing. The Glacier ice axe is both lightweight and efficient, ideal for glacier hiking. Another form, the Gully ice axe, is intended for alpinism and steep skiing. The Ride ice axe, compact and ultra-light, is a classic from Petzl. It is effective for both ski touring and freeride skiing. Finally, there are ranges of technical ice axes, including the Ergonomic ice axe, for uses in ice climbing and dry tooling.
But Petzl knows that relying on an ice axe is good, but standing on your feet is better. The Petzl crampons thus constitute the essential link between the ice and you. Indispensable due to their performance, durability, and ease of adjustment, they will accompany you on glaciers, in ice chimneys, or on mixed routes. The Irvis Hybrid crampons are suitable for ski touring and glacier approaches. Designed for classic alpinism, the Vasak Flexlock crampons feature 12 points for perfect stability. Finally, for glacier environments, Petzl offers various anchors, including the Laser Speed Light ice screws, ultra-lightweight with an integrated crank.
Petzl Helmets for All Situations
The result of over 30 years of development and innovation, the Petzl helmets are a reference in the field. Comfortable, lightweight, simple, and quick to adjust, they perfectly fulfil their essential role in safety equipment for vertical activities. The Meteor helmet, for example, is lightweight but offers necessary protection for climbing, alpinism, and ski touring. More robust, the Boreo helmet is still versatile and offers enhanced protection for climbing and alpinism. The helmet is a mandatory element for all activities in the mountains or on walls. In addition to protecting against falling objects (rocks, ice, etc.), it also provides enhanced protection against lateral, frontal, and rear impacts. And to complete the perfect climber's collection, the Grenoble-based brand offers a complete range of Petzl ropes. From single and double ropes, dynamic and semi-static ropes, to cordelettes and slings, find your happiness within the Petzl range. The Volta 9.2 mm rope, for example, is multi-type and ultra-light for performance in climbing or alpinism. All neatly packed in a Petzl rope bag, bringing you more serene adventures thanks to clever accessories born from many years of experience and field practice.
