Cycling Gloves
Whether you're heading out for a road ride, exploring mountain bike trails, or braving the chilly winter mornings, your hands deserve your utmost attention. Cycling gloves are not just an accessory: they are the direct link between you and your machine, ensuring your comfort and safety on every outing.
Why wear cycling gloves?
Riding without suitable Cycling gloves is a bit like going hiking in city shoes. Technically possible, but frankly not advisable. Your hands endure a lot: handlebar vibrations, repeated friction, temperature variations, and of course, any potential falls where they serve as your first line of defence. A good glove absorbs shocks, wicks away sweat, protects against the cold, and provides a firm grip on the handlebars. In short, it transforms a potentially uncomfortable ride into a moment of pure enjoyment.
What type of cycling gloves to choose based on your practice?
Each cycling discipline has its specific requirements. For mountain biking, opt for robust MTB gloves with palm reinforcements and a good grip, capable of withstanding branches and technical terrains. Road cyclists will prefer road cycling gloves, which are lighter and more aerodynamic, prioritising breathability and sensitivity on the handlebars.
When the thermometer drops, winter cycling gloves become your best allies with their enhanced thermal insulation, windproof membranes, and often waterproof technologies. And for summer rides or cyclists who prefer more freedom of movement, fingerless gloves offer optimal protection and ventilation while allowing your fingers to breathe.
How to choose your cycling gloves?
Beyond the season and discipline, several technical elements deserve your attention. Gel or foam padding on the palm absorbs vibrations and prevents numbness during long rides. Compatibility with touch screens is essential in our era where GPS and smartphones are integral to our two-wheeled adventures.
The breathability of materials ensures your hands stay dry, avoiding the discomfort of sweat-soaked fabrics. Closure systems, whether Velcro or elastic, should provide a perfect fit without pressure points. Some models even incorporate handy wiping zones on the thumb, a detail that makes all the difference when your nose runs or sweat beads on your forehead.
Finding the right size
A glove that is too tight restricts blood circulation and quickly becomes uncomfortable, while one that is too loose slips and reduces your precision on the handlebars. Measure the circumference of your hand at the knuckles, without tightening the tape measure, and consult the size guides provided by each brand. If you're unsure between two sizes, opt for the larger one for Cycling gloves that are sometimes worn with liners, and the more fitted one for summer models.
Maintaining your cycling gloves to extend their lifespan
Like all technical equipment, your Cycling gloves require a minimum of care. After each wet ride, let them air dry, never on a radiator that could damage the materials. Regular hand washing with a mild detergent preserves their technical properties. Models with leather reinforcements will appreciate an occasional nourishing treatment to maintain their suppleness.
Whether you're a weekend cyclist or addicted to daily rides, investing in a quality pair of Cycling gloves significantly enhances your experience on the bike. Your hands will thank you, mile after mile.
