Why wear a ski helmet, no matter your discipline?
A ski helmet not only protects your head in case of a fall or impact, but it also plays a vital role in your comfort against the elements: cold, wind, or snow. Whether you're racing down the slopes at speed, weaving off-piste in freeride, or climbing in ski touring to reach untouched summits, protection remains a priority. Modern ski helmets are specifically designed to meet the demands of these varied practices while offering comfort and versatility.
Criteria for choosing the right ski helmet
Each discipline has its specifics, and your ski helmet should take them into account. Here are the key points to consider:
Fit and comfort
Comfort is paramount, especially for long days in the mountains. A well-fitted ski helmet should stay in place without creating pressure points. Models equipped with precise adjustment systems, such as rear dials, ensure optimal support. For ski touring, opt for a lightweight and well-ventilated helmet to avoid overheating during intense climbs.
Appropriate ventilation
Ventilation needs vary depending on your practice. On the slopes, adjustable ventilation allows you to adapt to weather conditions. In ski touring, excellent ventilation is essential to wick away sweat during exertion. Some ski helmets even incorporate airflow management systems specifically designed for these varied uses.
Protection technologies
Technological advancements, such as the MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System), enhance protection levels against impacts. Freeride enthusiasts or off-piste riders will also appreciate ski helmets with hybrid shells, offering increased resistance for more demanding environments.
Versatility and compatibility
For ski touring enthusiasts, a versatile ski helmet suitable for both ascent and descent is an excellent choice. Also, check that it is compatible with your goggles or mask to ensure a perfect fit and avoid drafts or fogging. Some models include integrated visors, ideal for optimal protection against the sun and snow.
Ski helmets for every practice
Depending on your discipline, here are the characteristics to prioritise:
- On-piste skiing: Lightweight helmets, well-ventilated, and often equipped with removable ear protection.
- Freeride: Robust models with enhanced protection, perfect for challenging terrains.
- Ski touring: Ultra-light and breathable helmets, sometimes certified for mountaineering, for uphill efforts.
- Snowboarding: Helmets with a design that is often more covering, suited for riders transitioning from park to off-piste.
Maintenance and longevity of your ski helmet
To preserve your ski helmet and ensure its effectiveness, regular maintenance is necessary. After a day on the slopes or in the powder, clean it with a damp cloth and let it air dry. Store it in a protective cover to avoid damage. Finally, replace your ski helmet after a significant impact or every 5 years, even if it appears to be in good condition.
